Opening with good news from space: the Chandra space telescope has given scientists a fascinating glimpse into the turbulent core of one of the most famous supernova remnants Cassiopeia A.
What happened there? Huge amounts of silicon erupted outward while the chemical element neon penetrated inward, creating asymmetry in the star’s core.
Until now, astronomers thought supernovae exploded symmetrically.
The new research shows otherwise: the explosion was uneven, but much more thrilling and interesting.
Cassiopeia A, according to researchers, continues to reveal new information each time it is observed, bringing humanity a step closer to the ancient dream of understanding the language of the stars.
From space to the secrets of the Jurassic period: a pair of ancient flying reptiles of the species Pterodactylus perished in a massive storm, and their tiny bones were preserved almost perfectly.
The remains of the very young reptiles were discovered in Solnhofen limestone in Germany.
“Thanks to these two juveniles, we gained a rare window into the truth.
Our story was biased, and this is a scientific gift for us,” said the lead researcher, who had previously assumed the area in Germany was home only to small pterosaurs.
Finally, a tiger survey in a local nature reserve in northern India led to a rare and entirely different discovery: smooth-coated otters (also known as Malayan otters) were documented for the first time.
Researchers observed a large otter and, using additional cameras, were able to track it to a group of otters living together, roaming near water reservoirs and among rocks.
These otters live as families, hunt together, and are threatened by poaching.
The species can weigh up to 11 kilograms and is considered vulnerable, receiving the highest level of protection in India.
The incidental photographs provide a rare and important insight into the life of an endangered species and highlight the importance of protecting its natural habitat.
